Day 11 of 25: present-tense verb groups
Today we look at an important Level A2 topic: how Greek verbs conjugate in the present tense. The focus is on three groups: regular verbs ending in -ω, verbs of the μιλάω / μιλώ type, and verbs of the χρησιμοποιώ type.
1. What you need to learn
- The personal endings of the present tense: I, you, he/she, we, you (pl.), they.
- The difference between the groups: γράφω, μιλάω/μιλώ, χρησιμοποιώ.
- Stress: in Greek it matters and can be the difference between a correct form and a mistake.
- Handy phrases for Cyprus: at a café, in a class, at the bank, in the office, chatting with neighbours.
2. Group 1: regular verbs in -ω
Many frequent verbs belong to this group. Today we learn: γράφω - to write, διαβάζω - to read, μαθαίνω - to learn, to find out.
| Person | γράφω - to write | διαβάζω - to read | μαθαίνω - to learn / find out |
|---|---|---|---|
| εγώ - I | γράφω | διαβάζω | μαθαίνω |
| εσύ - you | γράφεις | διαβάζεις | μαθαίνεις |
| αυτός / αυτή / αυτό - he / she / it | γράφει | διαβάζει | μαθαίνει |
| εμείς - we | γράφουμε | διαβάζουμε | μαθαίνουμε |
| εσείς - you (pl.) | γράφετε | διαβάζετε | μαθαίνετε |
| αυτοί / αυτές / αυτά - they | γράφουν / γράφουνε | διαβάζουν / διαβάζουνε | μαθαίνουν / μαθαίνουνε |
The -ουνε form is often heard in colloquial speech: γράφουνε, διαβάζουνε, μαθαίνουνε. At A2 it is enough to know both forms confidently.
Examples
I am writing a message.
Maria reads Greek every day.
We are learning Greek in Nicosia.
My friends are reading at the café.
Do you write your name here?
3. Group 2: μιλάω / μιλώ
The verb μιλάω / μιλώ means to speak, to talk. It has two dictionary forms: μιλάω and μιλώ. In live speech μιλάω is very common, while the μιλώ form sounds a little shorter or more neutral.
| Person | Colloquial form | Short form | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| εγώ | μιλάω | μιλώ | I speak |
| εσύ | μιλάς | μιλάς | you speak |
| αυτός / αυτή / αυτό | μιλάει | μιλεί | he / she speaks |
| εμείς | μιλάμε | μιλούμε | we speak |
| εσείς | μιλάτε | μιλάτε | you (pl.) speak |
| αυτοί / αυτές / αυτά | μιλάνε | μιλούν | they speak |
Examples
I speak a little Greek.
Do you speak English?
In Cyprus many people speak Greek and English.
We talk with the teacher in the lesson.
The clerk speaks very clearly.
4. Group 3: χρησιμοποιώ
The verb χρησιμοποιώ means to use. It is a verb ending in -ώ. Its forms differ from the regular verbs in -ω.
| Person | Form | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| εγώ | χρησιμοποιώ | I use |
| εσύ | χρησιμοποιείς | you use |
| αυτός / αυτή / αυτό | χρησιμοποιεί | he / she uses |
| εμείς | χρησιμοποιούμε | we use |
| εσείς | χρησιμοποιείτε | you (pl.) use |
| αυτοί / αυτές / αυτά | χρησιμοποιούν / χρησιμοποιούνε | they use |
Examples
I use my mobile phone every day.
Do you use a card or cash?
In Cyprus we use euros.
The students use the book and the notebook.
Do you use this app?
5. Comparing the three groups
| Group | Example | I | You | He / she | We | You (pl.) | They |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular in -ω | γράφω | γράφω | γράφεις | γράφει | γράφουμε | γράφετε | γράφουν |
| μιλάω type | μιλάω | μιλάω | μιλάς | μιλάει | μιλάμε | μιλάτε | μιλάνε |
| -ώ type | χρησιμοποιώ | χρησιμοποιώ | χρησιμοποιείς | χρησιμοποιεί | χρησιμοποιούμε | χρησιμοποιείτε | χρησιμοποιούν |
6. Key rules
- The personal pronoun is often dropped. In Greek the ending already shows the person: Γράφω = I write, Μιλάμε = we speak.
- The pronoun is added for emphasis. Εγώ μιλάω ελληνικά, αλλά ο φίλος μου μιλάει αγγλικά. I speak Greek, but my friend speaks English.
- Learn the stress together with the form. For example: μιλάω, μιλάς, μιλάει; χρησιμοποιώ, χρησιμοποιείς.
- A question is made by intonation. The word order often does not change: Μιλάς ελληνικά; - Do you speak Greek?
7. Common mistakes
| Mistake | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| εγώ γράφεις | εγώ γράφω | With εγώ you need the 1st person form: -ω. |
| εσύ μιλάω | εσύ μιλάς | With εσύ the verb μιλάω has the form μιλάς. |
| εμείς χρησιμοποιείτε | εμείς χρησιμοποιούμε | χρησιμοποιείτε is "you (pl.) use", not "we use". |
| αυτοί διαβάζει | αυτοί διαβάζουν | For "they" you need the ending -ουν. |
| μιλώ ελληνικά; as the only colloquial form | Μιλάω ελληνικά; | The form μιλώ is correct, but in everyday speech μιλάω is heard more often. |
