Day 15 of 25: The genitive case in ready-made phrases

Today we look at the genitive case in fixed, frequently used A2-level phrases in a Cyprus context: της Κύπρου, της Δημοκρατίας, του Προέδρου, του κράτους, των πολιτών.

In English the genitive case is usually rendered with of or the possessive 's: "of Cyprus," "of the Republic," "of the President," "of the state," "of the citizens." In Greek these meanings are normally expressed through the form of the noun and a special article: της, του, των.

2. The main rule

In Greek the genitive case often comes after the head word. In other words, the structure is usually:

head word + genitive case
ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας — the President of the Republic
η κυβέρνηση της Κύπρου — the government of Cyprus
τα δικαιώματα των πολιτών — the rights of the citizens

Note: in English we often use a noun as a modifier, like "the Cyprus government," but in Greek it is natural to say η κυβέρνηση της Κύπρου, literally "the government of Cyprus."

3. Articles in the genitive case

Remember: του is used for both masculine and neuter in the singular. That is why του Προέδρου and του κράτους have the same article but different genders.

4. A closer look at the ready-made phrases

της Κύπρου — of Cyprus

The phrase της Κύπρου is used when we talk about something that belongs to Cyprus: a city, the capital, the government, history, the inhabitants, a map.

Η πρωτεύουσα της Κύπρου είναι η Λευκωσία.
The capital of Cyprus is Nicosia.

Μου αρέσει η ιστορία της Κύπρου.
I like the history of Cyprus.

Ο χάρτης της Κύπρου είναι στον τοίχο.
The map of Cyprus is on the wall.

της Δημοκρατίας — of the Republic

The phrase της Δημοκρατίας often appears in an official context: the President of the Republic, the Constitution of the Republic, the citizens of the Republic.

Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας μιλά σήμερα.
The President of the Republic is speaking today.

Το Σύνταγμα της Δημοκρατίας είναι σημαντικό.
The Constitution of the Republic is important.

Οι θεσμοί της Δημοκρατίας λειτουργούν κάθε μέρα.
The institutions of the Republic work every day.

του Προέδρου — of the President

The phrase του Προέδρου shows possession or connection: the President's office, the President's speech, the President's decision.

Το γραφείο του Προέδρου είναι στη Λευκωσία.
The office of the President is in Nicosia.

Η ομιλία του Προέδρου ήταν σύντομη.
The speech of the President was short.

Η απόφαση του Προέδρου είναι επίσημη.
The decision of the President is official.

του κράτους — of the state

The word κράτος is neuter: το κράτος. In the genitive case: του κράτους.

Οι υπηρεσίες του κράτους βοηθούν τους πολίτες.
The services of the state help the citizens.

Ο ρόλος του κράτους είναι σημαντικός.
The role of the state is important.

Η ασφάλεια του κράτους είναι προτεραιότητα.
The security of the state is a priority.

των πολιτών — of the citizens

In the plural the genitive case often takes the article των. The phrase των πολιτών means "of the citizens."

Τα δικαιώματα των πολιτών είναι σημαντικά.
The rights of the citizens are important.

Η γνώμη των πολιτών μετράει.
The opinion of the citizens counts.

Η συμμετοχή των πολιτών στις εκλογές είναι απαραίτητη.
The participation of the citizens in the elections is essential.

6. Common mistakes

οι υπηρεσίες το κράτος	οι υπηρεσίες του κράτους	το κράτος in the genitive case becomes του κράτους.
τα δικαιώματα οι πολίτες	τα δικαιώματα των πολιτών	In the plural the genitive article is των.

The main mistake English speakers make: leaving the second word in its base form. In Greek you cannot say literally "the capital Cyprus." You need: η πρωτεύουσα της Κύπρου.
