Day 16 of 25: The accusative case — direct object and direction

Topic of the day: the accusative case in Greek at level A2.

Today we look at how to say: I see the President, I go to the city, I go to the ministry, I fly to Cyprus.

Key examples: τον Πρόεδρο, την πόλη, στο υπουργείο, στην Κύπρο.

1. What you need to learn

In Greek the accusative case often answers the questions:

Direct object whom? what? Βλέπω τον Πρόεδρο. I see the President.
Direct object what? Αγαπώ την πόλη. I love the city.
Direction where to? Πηγαίνω στο υπουργείο. I go to the ministry.
Direction where to? Ταξιδεύω στην Κύπρο. I travel to Cyprus.

2. Articles in the accusative case

To use the accusative case correctly, it is important to know the forms of the definite article.

Gender Nominative case Accusative case Example
Masculine ο τον ο Πρόεδρος → βλέπω τον Πρόεδρο
Feminine η την / τη η πόλη → αγαπώ την πόλη
Neuter το το το υπουργείο → βλέπω το υπουργείο

Important: for the neuter the form of the article does not change: το υπουργείο can be "the ministry" as a subject and "the ministry" as the object of an action.

Το υπουργείο είναι στη Λευκωσία. — The ministry is in Nicosia.

Βλέπω το υπουργείο. — I see the ministry.

3. The direct object: whom? what?

After many verbs the object goes into the accusative case. This is especially common after the verbs βλέπω — to see, ξέρω — to know, αγαπώ — to love, θέλω — to want, διαβάζω — to read, επισκέπτομαι — to visit.

ξέρω Ξέρω την πόλη πολύ καλά. I know the city very well.
αγαπώ Αγαπώ την Κύπρο. I love Cyprus.
θέλω Θέλω τον καφέ μου χωρίς ζάχαρη. I want my coffee without sugar.
διαβάζω Διαβάζω την εφημερίδα. I read the newspaper.
επισκέπτομαι Επισκέπτομαι το μουσείο στη Λευκωσία. I visit the museum in Nicosia.

Examples in a Cyprus context

Σήμερα βλέπουμε τον Πρόεδρο στη συνέντευξη. — Today we see the President at the interview.
Η Μαρία ξέρει καλά την πόλη της Λάρνακας. — Maria knows the city of Larnaca well.
Ο Αντρέας αγοράζει την εφημερίδα κάθε πρωί. — Andreas buys the newspaper every morning.
Θέλω το εισιτήριο για τη Λεμεσό. — I want the ticket to Limassol.
Βλέπουμε το υπουργείο από το παράθυρο. — We see the ministry from the window.

4. Direction: where to? The preposition σε + accusative

To express direction, Greek often uses the preposition σε with the accusative case. In speech it usually merges with the article.

σε + τον στον Πηγαίνω στον Πρόεδρο. I go to the President.
σε + την στην Πηγαίνω στην πόλη. I go to the city.
σε + το στο Πηγαίνω στο υπουργείο. I go to the ministry.

Remember: in Greek direction is often expressed like this: πηγαίνω + σε + accusative.

Πηγαίνω στην Κύπρο. — I go to Cyprus.

Πηγαίνω στο υπουργείο. — I go to the ministry.

Πηγαίνω στην πόλη. — I go to the city.

5. Direction and location: the same form

In English we use different words for "where to?" and "where?": to the city and in the city. In Greek the same construction is very often used for both: σε + accusative.

Meaning Greek example Translation
Where to? Πηγαίνω στην Κύπρο. I go to Cyprus.
Where? Μένω στην Κύπρο. I live in Cyprus.
Where to? Πάω στο υπουργείο. I go to the ministry.
Where? Δουλεύω στο υπουργείο. I work at the ministry.

6. Noun forms in the accusative case

Some nouns change their ending. It is especially important to remember the masculine.

ο φίλος τον φίλο Περιμένω τον φίλο μου. I am waiting for my friend.

η πόλη την πόλη Αγαπώ την πόλη. I love the city.
το υπουργείο το υπουργείο Βλέπω το υπουργείο. I see the ministry.

7. Common mistakes

Mistake Correct Why
Βλέπω ο Πρόεδρος. Βλέπω τον Πρόεδρο. After "see whom?" you need the accusative case.
Πηγαίνω σε το υπουργείο. Πηγαίνω στο υπουργείο. σε + το merges into στο.
Πηγαίνω σε την Κύπρο. Πηγαίνω στην Κύπρο. σε + την merges into στην.
Ξέρω η πόλη. Ξέρω την πόλη. "Know what?" — the accusative case.

9. Short summary

The accusative case is needed for the direct object: βλέπω τον Πρόεδρο, αγαπώ την πόλη.

For direction use σε + accusative: στο υπουργείο, στην Κύπρο, στην πόλη.

Remember the merged forms: σε + τον = στον, σε + την = στην, σε + το = στο.
