Aorist: regular verbs — Greek A2, lesson 17

Today we study the αόριστος — the simple past tense in Greek. At A2 level it is important to learn how to talk about a completed action in the past: "wrote", "read", "asked", "answered", "started", "finished".

In everyday speech in Cyprus and Greece you will often hear the forms γράψανε, μιλήσανε, ρωτήσανε. At A2 level it is enough to know the standard -αν forms confidently.

Εγώ γράφω χθες.	Εγώ έγραψα χθες.	The word χθες requires the past tense.
Εσύ έγραψε.	Εσύ έγραψες.	For εσύ you need the ending -ες.
Εμείς έγραψαμε.	Εμείς γράψαμε.	In the "we" form the stress usually shifts: γράψαμε.
Ρώτησα στο φίλο μου.	Ρώτησα τον φίλο μου.	The verb ρωτάω usually takes a direct object: asked whom?
Απάντησα τον φίλο μου.	Απάντησα στον φίλο μου.	The verb απαντάω is usually used with σε: answered to whom?
