Day 18 of 25: The aorist — irregular verbs

Topic: the aorist of A2-level irregular verbs: έγινε, πήγα, ήρθα, είδα, είπα, πήρα, έδωσα, βρήκα, έκανα.

Context: everyday life in Cyprus: trips around town, cafés, the beach, meetings, shopping, paperwork, family.

1. What the aorist is

The aorist in Greek is used when we talk about a completed action in the past.

Χτες πήγα στη Λάρνακα.	Yesterday I went to Larnaca.	The action was completed yesterday.
Το πρωί είδα τον φίλο μου.	In the morning I saw my friend.	A single event in the past.
Το Σάββατο πήρα καφέ στη Λεμεσό.	On Saturday I got a coffee in Limassol.	A specific, completed action.

Important: in the aorist it is often not only the ending that changes, but the verb stem itself. That is why the forms πήγα, ήρθα, είδα, είπα should be learned as separate ready-made words.

2. The main irregular verbs

Note: in the forms δώσαμε, δώσατε, κάναμε, κάνατε, γίναμε, γίνατε the initial έ- usually drops out, because the stress already falls on the third syllable from the end or nearer.

4. Aorist marker words

5. Examples in a Cyprus setting

Η συνάντηση έγινε στις τρεις.	The meeting took place at three.

6. Negation and questions

For negation in the aorist we use δεν before the verb.

Πήρα ταξί.	Δεν πήρα ταξί.	I did not take a taxi.

A question is usually built without changing the word order. Intonation and the question mark ; show that it is a question.

7. Common mistakes

Mistake	Correct	Explanation
πήγαινα χτες στην Πάφο	πήγα χτες στην Πάφο	πήγαινα — "I used to go / was going regularly or over time", while πήγα — one completed action.
είπα τη θάλασσα	είδα τη θάλασσα	είπα = said, είδα = saw.
πήγα καφέ	πήρα καφέ	πήρα καφέ = I got / bought a coffee. πήγα = I went.
ήρθα στην Πάφο instead of πήγα στην Πάφο	Πήγα στην Πάφο.	ήρθα means "I came / arrived here". πήγα means "I went there".
τι έκανε; instead of τι έγινε;	Τι έγινε;	Τι έγινε; — a set expression, "What happened?"
