1. What to learn today

Today we study the forms of the passive aorist, which appear very often in historical texts, news, and descriptions of countries, cities, organisations and events.

At A2 level the point is not to build complex theory, but to learn to recognise and use a few frequent forms correctly:

εκλέχθηκε	was elected	a president, mayor, deputy, leader

πραγματοποιήθηκε	took place / was held	a meeting, an event, a ceremony, elections

Key idea: the passive aorist shows a completed event in the past. In a historical account this is usually one specific fact: when something was founded, signed, declared or held.

2. How the passive aorist works

In English these forms match the pattern "was / were + past participle":

Η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία ανακηρύχθηκε το 1960.
The Republic of Cyprus was declared in 1960.

Η συμφωνία υπογράφηκε στη Λευκωσία.
The agreement was signed in Nicosia.

In Greek the form often ends in -θηκε, -χθηκε or similar endings. For A2 it is enough to memorise the ready-made forms as set historical verbs.

5. Singular and plural

In historical descriptions you often need two forms: the singular and the plural.

7. Common mistakes

Ο πρόεδρος εκλέχθηκαν.	The subject is singular, so the verb must be singular.	Ο πρόεδρος εκλέχθηκε. The president was elected.

Remember: if a thing or a person receives the action, you often need the passive aorist: ιδρύθηκε, υπογράφηκε, εκλέχθηκε.
