Day 20 of 25: The future tense in Greek

Future tense: θα πάω, θα κάνω, θα διαβάσω, θα απαντήσω.

Main focus of the day: how to talk about the future at A2 level, and how the forms θα διαβάσω and θα διαβάζω differ.

Context: everyday life in Cyprus — meetings, work, cafés, courses, calls, messages and plans for tomorrow.

1. What to learn

Greek	English	When to use it
θα πάω	I will go	a one-off action in the future
θα κάνω	I will do / will be doing	the translation often depends on the context
θα διαβάσω	I will read / will study	an action with a result, or one specific occasion
θα διαβάζω	I will be reading / will study (regularly)	a process, a habit or an ongoing action in the future
θα απαντήσω	I will answer	one specific reply: to a message, an email, a question

Important: the particle θα almost always goes before the verb and marks the future tense.

Θα πάω στην τράπεζα. — I will go to the bank.

2. The basic rule of the future tense

In Greek the future tense is often built like this:

θα + verb

Θα κάνω καφέ. — I will make coffee.

Θα πάμε στη Λευκωσία. — We will go to Nicosia.

At A2 level it is important to tell apart two types of future:

One-off / completed	Θα διαβάσω το άρθρο.	I will read the article.	There is a specific result: the article will be read.
Ongoing / repeated	Θα διαβάζω κάθε βράδυ.	I will read every evening.	The action will be repeated or will continue.

3. Forms: θα πάω

Πηγαίνω — to go. In the future the form θα πάω is often used.

Αύριο θα πάω στη Λάρνακα. — Tomorrow I will go to Larnaca.

Το Σάββατο θα πάμε στην παραλία. — On Saturday we will go to the beach.

Θα πας στο φαρμακείο; — Will you go to the pharmacy?

Μετά τη δουλειά θα πάει σπίτι. — After work he will go home.

4. Forms: θα κάνω

Κάνω — to do, to make. It is one of the most common verbs in everyday speech.

Θα κάνω κράτηση σε ένα εστιατόριο. — I will make a booking at a restaurant.

Τι θα κάνεις αύριο; — What will you do tomorrow?

Θα κάνουμε μάθημα στις έξι. — We will have a lesson at six.

Θα κάνετε διάλειμμα; — Will you take a break?

5. Forms: θα διαβάσω

Διαβάζω — to read, to study. The form θα διαβάσω means an action in the future as one specific fact or result.

Το βράδυ θα διαβάσω ελληνικά. — In the evening I will study Greek.

Θα διαβάσω το μήνυμα και θα απαντήσω. — I will read the message and reply.

Θα διαβάσεις το κείμενο; — Will you read the text?

Θα διαβάσουμε το μάθημα πριν από το τεστ. — We will read the lesson before the test.

6. Forms: θα απαντήσω

Απαντώ / απαντάω — to answer. In the future the form θα απαντήσω is often used.

Θα απαντήσω στο email το απόγευμα. — I will answer the email in the afternoon.

Θα μου απαντήσεις σήμερα; — Will you answer me today?

Η Μαρία θα απαντήσει στο τηλέφωνο. — Maria will answer the phone.

Θα απαντήσουμε στην ερώτηση στο μάθημα. — We will answer the question in class.

7. The key difference: θα διαβάσω or θα διαβάζω

Form	Meaning	Example	Translation
θα διαβάσω	once, specific, with a result	Αύριο θα διαβάσω το άρθρο.	Tomorrow I will read the article.
θα διαβάζω	over time, regularly, as a habit	Από αύριο θα διαβάζω κάθε μέρα.	From tomorrow I will study every day.

Remember:

θα διαβάσω = something will get done.

θα διαβάζω = the action will continue or repeat.

8. Useful time words

9. Examples in a Cyprus setting

Αύριο θα πάω στο κέντρο της Λευκωσίας. — Tomorrow I will go to the centre of Nicosia.

Το απόγευμα θα κάνω μια βόλτα στη μαρίνα της Λεμεσού. — In the afternoon I will take a walk along the Limassol marina.

Θα διαβάσω το μενού και μετά θα παραγγείλω. — I will read the menu and then order.

Θα απαντήσω στον φίλο μου από την Πάφο. — I will answer my friend from Paphos.

Από τη Δευτέρα θα διαβάζω ελληνικά κάθε πρωί. — From Monday I will study Greek every morning.

Το Σάββατο θα πάμε στην Αγία Νάπα. — On Saturday we will go to Ayia Napa.

10. Common mistakes

Mistake	Why it is wrong	Correct
Εγώ θα πηγαίνω αύριο στη Λάρνακα.	If you mean one trip tomorrow, it is better to use the one-off form.	Αύριο θα πάω στη Λάρνακα.
Θα διαβάζω το άρθρο αύριο.	If you want to say "I will read the article", you need a result.	Αύριο θα διαβάσω το άρθρο.
Θα απαντάω στο email.	You could say this if you will be answering regularly. For a single email you need the form θα απαντήσω.	Θα απαντήσω στο email.
Θα κάνω κάθε μέρα ελληνικά.	The phrase works in casual speech, but it is better to add a more natural verb or word order.	Θα κάνω ελληνικά κάθε μέρα. / Θα διαβάζω ελληνικά κάθε μέρα.

The main rule of the day: if there is a specific result, you usually need a form like θα διαβάσω. If there is a process, a habit or repetition, you need a form like θα διαβάζω.
