Day 2 of 25: Prepositions in Greek

Level: A2. Context: everyday life in Cyprus — cafés, the bus, the sea, work, visitors, shops and meeting people.

Today we look at the key Greek prepositions: σε, από, με, για, χωρίς, μετά, πριν, μέχρι, as well as the forms στον, στην, στο, στους, στις, στα.

1. What you need to learn

Preposition Main meaning Example Translation
σε in, on, at, to Πάω σε καφέ στη Λευκωσία. I'm going to a café in Nicosia.
από from, out of Είμαι από την Κύπρο. I'm from Cyprus.
με with, by, by means of Πάω στη δουλειά με το λεωφορείο. I go to work by bus.
για for, about, to Αυτό είναι για εσένα. This is for you.
χωρίς without Καφέ χωρίς ζάχαρη, παρακαλώ. A coffee without sugar, please.
μετά after Μετά τη δουλειά πάμε για φαγητό. After work we go for a meal.
πριν before Πριν το μάθημα πίνω καφέ. Before the lesson I drink coffee.
μέχρι until, up to Δουλεύω μέχρι τις πέντε. I work until five.

2. The forms σε + article

The preposition σε often merges with the definite article. This is really important for natural speech.

Form Made up of When it's used Example
στον σε + τον masculine, singular στον γιατρό — to the doctor
στην σε + την feminine, singular στην αγορά — to the market
στο σε + το neuter, singular στο σπίτι — at home / to the house
στους σε + τους masculine, plural στους φίλους — to the friends
στις σε + τις feminine, plural στις παραλίες — to / at the beaches
στα σε + τα neuter, plural στα μαγαζιά — at the shops
Important: in Greek one form can express both direction and location. For example: Πάω στο σπίτι — "I'm going home", but Είμαι στο σπίτι — "I'm at home".

3. το / την / τον — these are not prepositions!

People often confuse το, την, τον with prepositions, because they stand next to prepositions (από τον, με την, για το) and "stick" to σε (→ στον, στην, στο). But on their own they are not prepositions. They are the definite article in the accusative case ("the specific one"), and in another role a short pronoun meaning "him / her / it".

3.1. The article: nominative and accusative case

The Greek article "the" has cases. After prepositions and as a direct object it takes the accusative case: τον, την, το.

Gender Nominative (who? what? — subject) Accusative (whom? what? — after a preposition / object)
masculine ο — ο άντρας (the man) τον — για τον άντρα (for the man)
feminine η — η γυναίκα (the woman) την — με την γυναίκα (with the woman)
neuter το — το παιδί (the child) το — από το παιδί (from the child)
Note: for the neuter the form το is the same in both cases, whereas the masculine and feminine change: ο → τον, η → την. That's why τον / την are the signal that you're looking at the accusative case (an object, not the subject).

3.2. The article after prepositions — examples

Δίνω το κλειδί στον γείτονα. — I give the key to the neighbour. (σε + τον)

Μιλάω για την δουλειά μου. — I'm talking about my job. (για + την)

Παίρνω καφέ από το περίπτερο. — I get a coffee from the kiosk. (από + το)

Περπατάω με τον σκύλο. — I'm walking with the dog. (με + τον)

Το δώρο είναι για την Άννα. — The gift is for Anna. (για + την)

3.3. το / την / τον as a pronoun "him / her / it"

The same forms τον, την, το replace a noun so you don't have to repeat it. In that case it's a short personal pronoun (a direct object), and it goes before the verb.

Form Meaning Example
τον him (masculine) Ξέρεις τον Γιώργο; — Ναι, τον ξέρω. (Do you know Giorgos? — Yes, I know him.)
την her / it (feminine) Θέλεις την σαλάτα; — Ναι, την θέλω. (Do you want the salad? — Yes, I want it.)
το it (neuter) Πού είναι το κλειδί; — Δεν το βρίσκω. (Where is the key? — I can't find it.)

3.4. How το / την / τον differ from "real" prepositions

Feature Prepositions (σε, από, με, για…) το / την / τον
What it is a linking function word (in, from, with, for) the article "the" (accusative case) or a pronoun "him/her/it"
Does it change by gender? No. από is always από Yes: τον (masc.), την (fem.), το (neut.)
Position in the sentence before the noun phrase: για τον φίλο the article goes with the noun; the pronoun goes before the verb: τον ξέρω
Can it be dropped? No, the meaning is lost The article sometimes can be; the pronoun cannot
Example together Μιλάω για τον γιατρό. — I'm talking about the doctor. (για is the preposition, τον is the accusative article)
Quick rule: a preposition answers the question "in relation to what?" (direction, source, purpose), while το / την / τον answer the question "whom? what?" — it's the case of a noun or a replacement for a noun. A preposition and the article often go together: από τον, για την, με το.
