Day 3 of 25. Noun gender and number in Greek

Topic: masculine -ος / -ης / -ας, feminine -η / -α / -ση, neuter -ο / -ι / -μα / -ος; the plural.

Level: A2. Context: everyday life in Cyprus — cafés, the shop, the neighbourhood, paperwork, renting, transport.

Goal for today: learn to quickly tell a noun's gender from its ending, choose the right article, and form the basic plural.

1. What you need to learn

Greek nouns have three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter. It's important to know the gender, because it determines the article, the adjectives and often the plural endings.

Gender Article in the singular Common endings Example
Masculine ο -ος, -ης, -ας ο δρόμος — road, street
Feminine η -η, -α, -ση η πλατεία — square
Neuter το -ο, -ι, -μα, -ος το σπίτι — house

Important: the ending helps you guess the gender, but it isn't a 100% guarantee. For example, ο δρόμος is masculine, but το τέλος is neuter, even though both end in -ος.

2. Masculine: -ος, -ης, -ας

Most masculine nouns take the article ο in the singular and οι in the plural.

Type Singular Plural Translation
-ος → -οι ο φίλος οι φίλοι friend — friends
-ος → -οι ο δρόμος οι δρόμοι road — roads
-ης → -ες ο μαθητής οι μαθητές student — students
-ης → -ες ο πελάτης οι πελάτες customer — customers
-ας → -ες ο άντρας οι άντρες man — men
-ας → -ες ο μήνας οι μήνες month — months

Ο φίλος μου μένει στη Λευκωσία.
My friend lives in Nicosia.

Οι φίλοι μου μένουν στη Λεμεσό.
My friends live in Limassol.

Ο πελάτης περιμένει στο καφέ.
The customer is waiting in the café.

Οι πελάτες πληρώνουν με κάρτα.
The customers pay by card.

3. Feminine: -η, -α, -ση

Feminine nouns usually take the article η in the singular and οι in the plural. Note: οι is used for both masculine and feminine in the plural.

Type Singular Plural Translation
-η → -ες η φίλη οι φίλες friend (f.) — friends
-η → -ες η πόλη οι πόλεις city — cities
-α → -ες η τράπεζα οι τράπεζες bank — banks
-α → -ες η ώρα οι ώρες hour — hours
-ση → -σεις η στάση οι στάσεις bus stop — bus stops
-ση → -σεις η κράτηση οι κρατήσεις booking — bookings

Η στάση είναι κοντά στο ξενοδοχείο.
The bus stop is near the hotel.

Οι στάσεις στην Πάφο είναι καθαρές.
The bus stops in Paphos are clean.

Η τράπεζα είναι ανοιχτή σήμερα.
The bank is open today.

Οι τράπεζες κλείνουν νωρίς.
The banks close early.

4. Neuter: -ο, -ι, -μα, -ος

Neuter nouns take the article το in the singular and τα in the plural.

Type Singular Plural Translation

The house is in Larnaca.

Τα σπίτια εδώ είναι ακριβά.
The houses here are expensive.

Το λεωφορείο πάει στο κέντρο.
The bus goes to the centre.

Τα λεωφορεία στην Κύπρο δεν έρχονται πάντα συχνά.
Buses in Cyprus don't always come often.

5. The main rule for the plural

In the plural you have to change not only the noun's ending but also the article.

Gender Singular Plural Example
Masculine ο οι ο φίλος → οι φίλοι
Feminine η οι η φίλη → οι φίλες
Neuter το τα το σπίτι → τα σπίτια

Remember: οι is pronounced like "ee" and is used for both masculine and feminine in the plural. τα is used for the neuter.

6. Common patterns at A2

Pattern Singular Plural Phrase
Masculine -ος ο γιατρός οι γιατροί Οι γιατροί είναι στο νοσοκομείο.
The doctors are at the hospital.
Masculine -ης ο χάρτης οι χάρτες Έχω δύο χάρτες της Κύπρου.
I have two maps of Cyprus.
Feminine η παραλία οι παραλίες Οι παραλίες στην Αγία Νάπα είναι γνωστές.
The beaches in Ayia Napa are well known.
Feminine -ση η αίτηση οι αιτήσεις Οι αιτήσεις είναι στο γραφείο.
The applications are in the office.
Neuter -μα το πρόβλημα τα προβλήματα Έχουμε δύο προβλήματα.
We have two problems.

7. Common mistakes

Mistake 1. Confusing the articles οι and τα

You can't say οι σπίτια, because σπίτι is neuter.

Correct: τα σπίτια — houses.

Mistake 2. Assuming every word ending in -ος is masculine

Many words ending in -ος really are masculine: ο δρόμος, ο φίλος. But some words ending in -ος are neuter.

Examples: το λάθος — mistake, το μέρος — place, το τέλος — end.

Mistake 3. Forgetting to change the ending in the plural

You can't say οι φίλος. You have to change both the article and the noun.

Correct: ο φίλος → οι φίλοι.

Mistake 4. Guessing gender from your own language

English nouns have no grammatical gender, so you can't rely on intuition — you simply have to learn each word's gender. For example, το πρόβλημα is neuter, so in the plural it's τα προβλήματα.
