4. How to make the adjective agree
To choose the right form, ask three questions:
- What gender is the noun? For example: ο δρόμος, η παραλία, το σπίτι.
- Singular or plural? For example: η μεγάλη παραλία, but οι μεγάλες παραλίες.
- Which case do you need? After many prepositions, especially σε, you often use the Accusative case.
| Step | Example | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Gender | η πόλη | The noun is feminine, so: μεγάλη πόλη. |
| Number | οι πόλεις | Plural, feminine: μεγάλες πόλεις. |
| Case | στη μεγάλη πόλη | After σε + την = στην comes the Accusative case. |
5. Word order
In a normal, neutral phrase the adjective usually goes before the noun:
- ένα μεγάλο σπίτι - a big house
- μια σημαντική δουλειά - an important job
- ο μεγάλος δρόμος - the big road
The adjective can also come after the noun, especially when it is part of the predicate:
- Το σπίτι είναι μεγάλο. - The house is big.
- Η συνάντηση είναι σημαντική. - The meeting is important.
- Οι τιμές είναι μεγάλες. - The prices are high.

Frequently asked questions
How does a Greek adjective agree with its noun?
In gender, number and case at the same time: μεγάλος φίλος, μεγάλη πόλη, μεγάλο κράτος. In the plural: μεγάλοι φίλοι, μεγάλες πόλεις, μεγάλα κράτη.
Does the adjective go before or after the noun?
Between the article and the noun: η μεγάλη πόλη, το μικρό σπίτι. Placing it after the noun turns it into a predicate: η πόλη είναι μεγάλη.
What if the gender of the noun is not obvious?
Go by the article, not the ending. το κράτος is neuter, so it takes μεγάλο κράτος, even though -ος looks masculine.
