Day 9 of 25: Adjective declension — big city, big country, big state
Today we look at how the Greek adjective μεγάλος / μεγάλη / μεγάλο — big (masculine / feminine / neuter) — is declined. It's a Level A2 topic, with examples from the Cyprus context.
1. What you need to learn
- μεγάλος — big, masculine: ο μεγάλος δρόμος — the big road / main street.
- μεγάλη — big, feminine: η μεγάλη πόλη — the big city.
- μεγάλο — big, neuter: το μεγάλο κράτος — the big state.

3. Declension: η μεγάλη πόλη — the big city
The word η πόλη is feminine. That is why we use the form μεγάλη.

4. Declension: η μεγάλη χώρα — the big country
The word η χώρα is also feminine. So the form of the adjective is the same: μεγάλη.

5. Declension: το μεγάλο κράτος — the big state
The word το κράτος is neuter. That is why we use the form μεγάλο. In the Genitive case singular it becomes του μεγάλου κράτους.

10. Short summary
The main rule of the day: the adjective changes together with the noun. Look at the Greek gender, not the English one: η πόλη and η χώρα take the form μεγάλη, while το κράτος takes the form μεγάλο.
