Day 5 of 25: Masculine noun declension

Today we look at four common A2-level masculine nouns: ο πρόεδρος — president, chairman; ο υπουργός — minister; ο πολίτης — citizen; ο μήνας — month.

The setting for this lesson is everyday Greek in Cyprus: the state, city life, documents, the calendar, the news and everyday conversation.

1. What you need to learn

Cases: Nominative, Genitive, Accusative, Vocative.
Singular and plural.
Article: ο, του, τον; οι, των, τους.
Endings of masculine nouns in -ος, -της, -ας.
Stress: in some forms it shifts.

Important: in Greek the article often helps you tell the case. For example: ο υπουργός — the minister as the subject, τον υπουργό — the minister as the direct object, του υπουργού — of the minister / the minister's.

2. Cases in plain terms

3. Declension: ο πρόεδρος

ο πρόεδρος is a masculine noun in -ος. In the genitive the stress shifts: του προέδρου, των προέδρων.

Ο πρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας μένει στη Λευκωσία.
The president of the Republic of Cyprus lives in Nicosia.

Η ομιλία του προέδρου ήταν σύντομη.
The president's speech was short.

Οι πολίτες ακούνε τον πρόεδρο.
The citizens are listening to the president.

Οι πρόεδροι των κοινοτήτων συζητούν ένα νέο σχέδιο.
The community chairmen are discussing a new plan.

4. Declension: ο υπουργός

ο υπουργός also ends in -ος, but the stress is on the last syllable. So across the forms it stays close to the ending: του υπουργού, τον υπουργό, οι υπουργοί.

Βλέπουμε τον υπουργό σε μια συνάντηση.
We see the minister at a meeting.

Οι υπουργοί έχουν συνεδρίαση σήμερα.
The ministers have a session today.

Οι αποφάσεις των υπουργών επηρεάζουν τους πολίτες.
The ministers' decisions affect the citizens.

5. Declension: ο πολίτης

ο πολίτης is a masculine noun in -της. In the plural it becomes οι πολίτες, and in the genitive plural — των πολιτών.

The citizen's card is ready.

Η υπάλληλος βοηθάει τον πολίτη.
The clerk is helping the citizen.

Οι πολίτες κάνουν ερωτήσεις.
The citizens are asking questions.

Τα δικαιώματα των πολιτών είναι σημαντικά.
The citizens' rights are important.

6. Declension: ο μήνας

ο μήνας is a masculine noun in -ας. It is a very useful word for talking about deadlines, renting, work and paperwork.

Ο μήνας είναι δύσκολος.
The month is tough.

At the end of the month we pay the rent.

Θα μείνω στην Κύπρο έναν μήνα.
I will stay in Cyprus for one month.

Οι μήνες του καλοκαιριού είναι ζεστοί.
The summer months are hot.

Το πρόγραμμα των μηνών Ιουλίου και Αυγούστου είναι γεμάτο.
The schedule for the months of July and August is packed.

7. Key rules

Masculine in -της	-της, -τη, -τη	-τες, -τών, -τες	ο πολίτης, του πολίτη, των πολιτών
Masculine in -ας	-ας, -α, -α	-ες, -ών, -ες	ο μήνας, του μήνα, των μηνών

Remember: in the plural the genitive often ends in -ων or -ών: των προέδρων, των υπουργών, των πολιτών, των μηνών.

8. Common mistakes

Mistake 1: confusing the nominative and the accusative

Wrong: Βλέπω ο υπουργός.

Right: Βλέπω τον υπουργό. — I see the minister.

Mistake 2: dropping the article

In Greek the article is often required. It is best to learn a noun together with its article: ο πρόεδρος, ο υπουργός, ο πολίτης, ο μήνας.

Mistake 3: putting the stress in the wrong place

Compare: ο πρόεδρος — του προέδρου, but ο υπουργός — του υπουργού.

Mistake 4: mixing up plural forms

Wrong: οι υπουργός

Right: οι υπουργοί — the ministers.

Wrong: των πολίτες

Right: των πολιτών — of the citizens.

Ο πολίτης έχει ραντεβού στο ΚΕΠ.
The citizen has an appointment at the Citizen Service Centre.

Οι πολίτες περιμένουν στην ουρά.
The citizens are waiting in the queue.

Η απόφαση του υπουργού είναι νέα.
The minister's decision is new.

Ο πρόεδρος επισκέπτεται τη Λεμεσό.
The president is visiting Limassol.
