Day 6 of 25: Feminine noun declension

Topic of the day

Today we look at A2-level feminine nouns in a Cyprus context:

η πόλη — city, η χώρα — country, η κυβέρνηση — government, η απόφαση — decision, η κοινότητα — community.

Main goal: learn to change the article and the ending correctly in the singular and plural.

1. What you need to learn

Accusative την τις Whom? What? Object of the action, often after prepositions

At A2 it is especially important to tell these apart confidently: η — as the subject, την — the object or after a preposition, της — "of the / of her / of the country / of the city".

3. Key rules

Rule 1: The article must change

In Greek the article is part of the grammar. You cannot just learn the word πόλη; you need to learn the set η πόλη, της πόλης, την πόλη.

Το κέντρο της πόλης είναι παλιό. The city centre is old.
Βλέπω την πόλη από το μπαλκόνι. I see the city from the balcony.

Rule 2: After many prepositions the accusative is used

After σε, από, για, με the accusative is often used: την πόλη, τη χώρα, την κοινότητα.

Πηγαίνω στην πόλη. — I am going to the city.
Μιλάμε για την απόφαση. — We are talking about the decision.
Εργάζομαι με την κοινότητα. — I work with the community.

Rule 3: With words in -ση the plural often ends in -σεις

η κυβέρνηση → οι κυβερνήσεις, η απόφαση → οι αποφάσεις.

Η κυβέρνηση παίρνει μια απόφαση. — The government makes one decision.
Οι κυβερνήσεις παίρνουν πολλές αποφάσεις. — The governments make many decisions.

Rule 4: The genitive plural often shifts the stress

Notice the forms: των πόλεων, των χωρών, των κυβερνήσεων, των αποφάσεων, των κοινοτήτων.

Important: at A2 you don't need to explain every historical reason for the stress patterns perfectly. But you do need to recognise the forms and gradually memorise them.

4. Common mistakes

Mistake Correct Why
η πόλεις οι πόλεις The plural needs the article οι.
της πόλη της πόλης In the genitive both the article and the ending change.
την χώρας την χώρα / τη χώρα After την you need the accusative.
οι απόφαση οι αποφάσεις The plural of a word in -ση: -σεις.
των κοινότητες των κοινοτήτων After των you need the genitive plural form.

5. Useful phrases in a Cyprus context

Η Λεμεσός είναι μια ζωντανή πόλη. Limassol is a lively city.
Η χώρα έχει πολλές παραλίες. The country has many beaches.
Η κυβέρνηση της Κύπρου ανακοινώνει την απόφαση. The government of Cyprus is announcing the decision.
Η απόφαση αφορά την κοινότητα. The decision concerns the community.
Οι κοινότητες κοντά στην Πάφο είναι ήσυχες. The communities near Paphos are quiet.
Μιλάμε με τους ανθρώπους της κοινότητας. We talk with the people of the community.
Οι αποφάσεις των κυβερνήσεων είναι σημαντικές. The governments' decisions are important.
