Day 23 of 25: subordinate clauses in Greek

Today we look at conjunctions and linking words: ότι, που, γιατί, επειδή, όταν, αν, για να.

Level: A2. Context: everyday life in Cyprus — work, cafés, the bus, the sea, renting, meetings, shopping and everyday conversation.

1. What to learn

Conjunction Meaning When to use it Example

I'm not coming because I'm working.
επειδή because, since To give a reason; sounds a bit more definite than γιατί Μένω σπίτι επειδή κάνει πολλή ζέστη.
I'm staying home because it's very hot.
όταν when Time: when something happens Όταν τελειώσω, θα πάω για καφέ.
When I finish, I'll go for a coffee.
αν if Condition Αν έχεις χρόνο, πάμε στη θάλασσα.
If you have time, let's go to the sea.
για να in order to, so as to Purpose of an action Μαθαίνω ελληνικά για να μιλάω στην Κύπρο.
I'm learning Greek in order to speak it in Cyprus.

2. The key rule

A subordinate clause depends on the main clause and adds information: what exactly, why, when, under what condition or with what purpose.

Important: if the subordinate clause comes first, a comma often follows it: Αν βρέχει, μένουμε σπίτι. — If it's raining, we stay home.

3. Ότι — "that"

ότι is used when we convey information, an opinion, knowledge or a message. It often follows verbs like: λέω — to say, ξέρω — to know, νομίζω — to think, πιστεύω — to believe, βλέπω — to see, καταλαβαίνω — to understand.

Greek Translation
Ξέρω ότι μιλάς ελληνικά. I know that you speak Greek.
Νομίζω ότι το περίπτερο είναι ανοιχτό. I think that the kiosk is open.
Η Μαρία λέει ότι δουλεύει στη Λάρνακα. Maria says that she works in Larnaca.
Καταλαβαίνω ότι είσαι κουρασμένος. I understand that you're tired.
Πιστεύω ότι η Κύπρος είναι πολύ όμορφη. I believe that Cyprus is very beautiful.

Pattern: ρήμα + ότι + πρόταση
verb + that + clause

4. Που — "who", "which", "that"

που often links a noun to a description. In English this is usually who, which, that.

Greek Translation What που describes
Το σπίτι που νοικιάζω είναι μικρό. The house that I'm renting is small. το σπίτι
Η γυναίκα που μένει δίπλα είναι από την Πάφο. The woman who lives next door is from Paphos. η γυναίκα
Το καφέ που μου αρέσει είναι κοντά στη θάλασσα. The café that I like is near the sea. το καφέ
Οι φίλοι που γνώρισα στη Λεμεσό είναι πολύ ευγενικοί. The friends I met in Limassol are very kind. οι φίλοι
Important: που does not change for gender or number. One form works for "who", "which" and "that".

που can also be used after expressions of emotion:

Χαίρομαι που είσαι εδώ. I'm glad that you're here.
Λυπάμαι που δεν μπορείς να έρθεις. I'm sorry that you can't come.

5. Γιατί and επειδή — reason

Both words can translate as because. But there is a difference:

Examples with γιατί

Δεν πάω στην παραλία γιατί φυσάει. I'm not going to the beach because it's windy.
Γιατί δεν παίρνεις ταξί; Why don't you take a taxi?
Θέλω νερό γιατί κάνει ζέστη. I want water because it's hot.

Examples with επειδή

Greek Translation
Δεν οδηγώ επειδή δεν έχω άδεια. I don't drive because I don't have a licence.
Μένουμε μέσα επειδή βρέχει. We're staying inside because it's raining.
Πάω νωρίς επειδή έχω ραντεβού. I'm going early because I have an appointment.

6. Όταν — "when"

όταν indicates time: when an action happens.

Situation Greek Translation
Habitual action Όταν έχω χρόνο, πίνω καφέ με φίλους. When I have time, I have coffee with friends.
Future action Όταν φτάσω, θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο. When I arrive, I'll call you.
Past action Όταν ήμουν στη Λάρνακα, πήγαινα συχνά στη θάλασσα. When I was in Larnaca, I often went to the sea.
Important for A2: in a future sense we usually say Όταν έρθω, θα μιλήσουμε. — When I come, we'll talk.

7. Αν — "if"

αν introduces a condition. The main clause often has θα when we're talking about a future result.

Pattern Example Translation
Αν + present, present Αν πεινάς, έχει φαγητό. If you're hungry, there's food.
Αν + verb, θα + verb Αν βρέχει, θα μείνουμε σπίτι. If it rains, we'll stay home.
Αν δεν + verb Αν δεν έχεις αυτοκίνητο, πάρε λεωφορείο. If you don't have a car, take the bus.

Examples

Αν τελειώσω νωρίς, θα πάω στη Λεμεσό. If I finish early, I'll go to Limassol.
Αν θέλεις, μπορούμε να φάμε σουβλάκι. If you like, we can eat souvlaki.
Αν δεν καταλαβαίνεις, ρώτα με. If you don't understand, ask me.
Θα έρθω αν έχω χρόνο. I'll come if I have time.

8. Για να — "in order to"

για να shows purpose: why someone does something.

Main action Purpose Translation
Πάω στο φροντιστήριο για να μάθω ελληνικά. I go to the tutoring school to learn Greek.
Παίρνω ταξί για να μην αργήσω. I take a taxi so as not to be late.
Διαβάζω κάθε μέρα για να μιλάω καλύτερα. I study every day in order to speak better.
Negation: after για να we usually use μην: για να μην αργήσω — so as not to be late.

9. Ότι or που?

This is a common difficulty. Remember a simple distinction:

ότι You convey a thought, a fact, a message Ξέρω ότι είσαι από την Κύπρο.
I know that you're from Cyprus.
που You describe a noun Ο φίλος που είναι από την Κύπρο μιλάει ελληνικά.
The friend who is from Cyprus speaks Greek.

Compare:

Βλέπω ότι το μαγαζί είναι κλειστό. I see that the shop is closed. We convey a fact.
Το μαγαζί που είναι κοντά μου είναι κλειστό. The shop that's near me is closed. We describe the shop.

10. Common mistakes

Mistake Correct Why
Ξέρω που είσαι κουρασμένος. Ξέρω ότι είσαι κουρασμένος. After "I know that..." you normally need ότι.
Το σπίτι ότι νοικιάζω είναι μικρό. Το σπίτι που νοικιάζω είναι μικρό. We're describing the noun το σπίτι, so we need που.
Πάω νωρίς γιατί να βρω θέση. Πάω νωρίς για να βρω θέση. For purpose we use για να, not γιατί.
Για να δεν αργήσω. Για να μην αργήσω. After για να the negation is usually μην.
Αν θα έχω χρόνο, θα έρθω. Αν έχω χρόνο, θα έρθω. At A2 level we usually don't put θα after αν.
Όταν θα φτάσω, θα σε πάρω. Όταν φτάσω, θα σε πάρω. For the future tense after όταν we usually use the form without θα.

11. Handy phrases for Cyprus

Greek English translation
Μπορείς να μου πεις αν το λεωφορείο πάει στη Λευκωσία; Can you tell me whether the bus goes to Nicosia?
Θέλω να ξέρω πότε ανοίγει το φαρμακείο. I want to know when the pharmacy opens.
Πάμε πιο νωρίς για να βρούμε πάρκινγκ. Let's go earlier to find parking.
Δεν πάω στη θάλασσα επειδή έχει πολλή ζέστη. I'm not going to the sea because it's very hot.
Το εστιατόριο που μου πρότεινες είναι πολύ καλό. The restaurant that you recommended to me is very good.
Νομίζω ότι σήμερα έχει πολλή κίνηση. I think that there's a lot of traffic today.
Αν είσαι κοντά, έλα για καφέ. If you're nearby, come for a coffee.
Όταν τελειώσεις τη δουλειά, στείλε μου μήνυμα. When you finish work, send me a message.
