Final review: articles, cases, declensions, aorist, να, questions, prepositions

The day: final review

The aim of this lesson is to bring together the main A2 topics of Modern Greek and practise them in situations typical of life in Cyprus: café, bus, shop, renting, meeting someone, the doctor, the taverna, finding your way around town.

What to learn and review:

Important: in everyday speech in Cyprus you'll hear Cypriot variants of words and pronunciation, but at A2 it's better to use standard Modern Greek with confidence.

1. Articles

In Greek the article shows the gender, number and case of the noun. English "a/the" never changes for gender or case, so the challenge is getting that agreement right rather than the article itself.

The definite article

Case Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative ο φίλος η φίλη το σπίτι οι φίλοι, οι φίλες, τα σπίτια
Genitive του φίλου της φίλης του σπιτιού των φίλων, των σπιτιών
Accusative τον φίλο τη φίλη το σπίτι τους φίλους, τις φίλες, τα σπίτια

The indefinite article

Gender Nominative Genitive Accusative
Masculine ένας καφές ενός καφέ έναν καφέ
Feminine μία / μια σαλάτα μίας / μιας σαλάτας μία / μια σαλάτα
Neuter ένα εισιτήριο ενός εισιτηρίου ένα εισιτήριο

Θέλω έναν κυπριακό καφέ. — I'd like a Cypriot coffee.

Πού είναι η στάση του λεωφορείου; — Where is the bus stop?

Βλέπω τη φίλη μου στη Λάρνακα. — I see my friend in Larnaca.

Common mistake: mixing up ο and το. For example, it's ο καφές, but το νερό.

Another mistake: after a verb you usually need the accusative case: βλέπω τον φίλο, not βλέπω ο φίλος.

2. Cases

At A2, three cases matter most: the nominative, the genitive and the accusative.

Case Question Main function Example
Nominative Who? What? (subject) subject Ο Αντρέας μένει στη Λευκωσία. — Andreas lives in Nicosia.
Genitive Of whom? Of what? Whose? (possession) possession, specification Το σπίτι της Μαρίας είναι κοντά στη θάλασσα. — Maria's house is near the sea.
Accusative Whom? What? Where to? (object / direction) object of an action, direction Παίρνω το λεωφορείο για τη Λεμεσό. — I take the bus to Limassol.
Vocative addressing someone when we call out to a person Κώστα, έλα εδώ! — Kostas, come here!

Η τιμή του εισιτηρίου είναι δύο ευρώ. — The price of the ticket is two euros.

Περιμένω τον γιατρό. — I'm waiting for the doctor.

Πάμε στην Πάφο αύριο. — We're going to Paphos tomorrow.

3. Noun and adjective declensions

Nouns and adjectives must agree in gender, number and case.

Type Singular Plural Example with translation
Masculine in -ος ο δρόμος, τον δρόμο οι δρόμοι, τους δρόμους Ο δρόμος είναι κλειστός. — The road is closed.
Masculine in -ης ο μαθητής, τον μαθητή οι μαθητές, τους μαθητές Ο μαθητής μιλάει ελληνικά. — The student speaks Greek.
Feminine in -α η ώρα, την ώρα οι ώρες, τις ώρες Τι ώρα είναι; — What time is it?
Feminine in -η η στάση, τη στάση οι στάσεις, τις στάσεις Η στάση είναι κοντά. — The bus stop is nearby.
Neuter in -ο το βιβλίο τα βιβλία Διαβάζω ένα βιβλίο. — I'm reading a book.
Neuter in -ι το σπίτι τα σπίτια Το σπίτι είναι στη Λάρνακα. — The house is in Larnaca.

Adjectives

Masculine Feminine Neuter Example
καλός καλή καλό καλός καφές, καλή μέρα, καλό φαγητό
μεγάλος μεγάλη μεγάλο μεγάλος δρόμος, μεγάλη πόλη, μεγάλο σπίτι
φτηνός φτηνή φτηνό φτηνός χυμός, φτηνή σαλάτα, φτηνό εισιτήριο

Θέλω μια μικρή σαλάτα και ένα κρύο νερό. — I'd like a small salad and a cold water.

Μένουμε σε ένα μεγάλο διαμέρισμα στη Λεμεσό. — We live in a big flat in Limassol.

Αγοράζω φρέσκο χαλούμι από τον φούρνο. — I buy fresh halloumi from the bakery.

Common mistake: forgetting to change the adjective. Correct: η καλή φίλη, το καλό φαγητό, ο καλός γιατρός.

4. Aorist

The aorist is used for a completed action in the past: did, went, bought, said, saw.

Present tense Aorist Translation Example
κάνω έκανα to do → did Έκανα κράτηση. — I made a booking.
πάω / πηγαίνω πήγα to go → went Πήγα στην Πάφο. — I went to Paphos.
βλέπω είδα to see → saw Είδα τον φίλο μου. — I saw my friend.
λέω είπα to say → said Είπα την αλήθεια. — I told the truth.
τρώω έφαγα to eat → ate Έφαγα χαλούμι. — I ate halloumi.
πίνω ήπια to drink → drank Ήπια έναν καφέ. — I drank a coffee.
αγοράζω αγόρασα to buy → bought Αγόρασα εισιτήριο. — I bought a ticket.

Personal endings of the aorist

Person Example: αγοράζω → αγόρασα Translation
εγώαγόρασαI bought
εσύαγόρασεςyou bought
αυτός / αυτή / αυτόαγόρασεhe / she / it bought
εμείςαγοράσαμεwe bought
εσείςαγοράσατεyou bought
αυτοί / αυτές / αυτάαγόρασανthey bought

Note: the aorist is often needed after χτες, προχτές, το πρωί, πέρσι, when the action is completed.

Correct: Χτες πήγα στη Λευκωσία. — Yesterday I went to Nicosia.

5. The να construction

Να is used after verbs of wanting, need, possibility, requests and plans. After να the verb usually takes the dependent (subjunctive) form.

Construction Meaning Example
θέλω να... I want to... Θέλω να μάθω ελληνικά. — I want to learn Greek.
πρέπει να... I have to... Πρέπει να πάω στην τράπεζα. — I have to go to the bank.
μπορώ να... I can... Μπορώ να πληρώσω με κάρτα; — Can I pay by card?
μου αρέσει να... I like to... Μου αρέσει να περπατάω στη θάλασσα. — I like walking by the sea.
πάω να... I'm going to... Πάω να αγοράσω ψωμί. — I'm going to buy bread.

Θέλουμε να κλείσουμε τραπέζι για απόψε. — We want to book a table for tonight.

Πρέπει να πάρετε ταξί για το αεροδρόμιο. — You need to take a taxi to the airport.

Μπορείς να με βοηθήσεις; — Can you help me?

Common mistake: after θέλω don't just add a second verb the way English uses the infinitive ("I want to go"). Greek has no infinitive: correct is θέλω να πάω, not θέλω πάω.

6. Questions

In Greek a question often has the same word order as a statement, but the intonation changes. In writing, a Greek ; is used instead of the question mark.

Question word Translation Example
ποιος / ποια / ποιοwho? which?Ποιος είναι αυτός; — Who is that?
πούwhere? where to?Πού είναι το φαρμακείο; — Where is the pharmacy?
πότεwhen?Πότε φεύγει το λεωφορείο; — When does the bus leave?
πώςhow?Πώς πάω στη Μαρίνα; — How do I get to the marina?
πόσοhow much?Πόσο κάνει ο καφές; — How much is the coffee?
γιατίwhy?Γιατί αργείς; — Why are you late?
τιwhat?Τι θέλετε; — What would you like?

Έχετε χαλούμι; — Do you have halloumi?

Μπορώ να πληρώσω με κάρτα; — Can I pay by card?

Πού μπορώ να αγοράσω εισιτήριο; — Where can I buy a ticket?

Τι ώρα ανοίγει η τράπεζα; — What time does the bank open?

7. Prepositions

Prepositions in Greek often require the accusative case. It's especially important to learn the combinations with the article.

Preposition Meaning Example
σε in, on, to Μένω σε ένα διαμέρισμα. — I live in a flat.
στον / στην / στο in, on, to + the definite article Πάω στην τράπεζα. — I'm going to the bank.
από from, of Είμαι από τη Ρωσία. — I'm from Russia.
με with, by Πάω με ταξί. — I'm going by taxi.
για for, about Ένα τραπέζι για δύο άτομα. — A table for two.
χωρίς without Καφέ χωρίς ζάχαρη. — Coffee without sugar.
μετά after Μετά τη δουλειά πάω σπίτι. — After work I go home.
πριν από before Πριν από το μάθημα πίνω καφέ. — Before the lesson I drink coffee.

Remember the merged forms: σε + τον = στον, σε + την = στην, σε + το = στο, σε + τους = στους, σε + τις = στις, σε + τα = στα.

8. Common mistakes before the test

Mistake Wrong Correct
Nominative instead of accusative Βλέπω ο φίλος. Βλέπω τον φίλο.
Dropping να Θέλω πάω σπίτι. Θέλω να πάω σπίτι.
Wrong article η καφές ο καφές
No adjective agreement μια καλό μέρα μια καλή μέρα
